CME 1st Quarter 2007

GRAND ROUNDS
The intent of the Grand Rounds series is to present information in keeping with the needs of the broadest possible physician audience. The purpose of CME is to enhance the physician's ability to care for patients. It is the responsibility of the St. Charles Education Committee to assure that CME activities are designed primarily for that purpose. Grand Rounds are at 0700 in the Center for Health & Learning at St. Charles Medical Center ‚ Bend, Conference Rooms C & D.

    "Adult Growth Hormone Deficiency Syndrome"
    David Cook, MD, Professor, OHSU; Interim Division Chief, Division of Endocrinology, Department of Medicine, OHSU
    At the completion of this education activity, participants will be able to: 1) Define adult GH deficiency syndrome and contrast it with the pediatric syndrome. 2) Explain how the diagnosis is made on a laboratory basis and a presentation basis. 3) Discuss the targets for therapy and show how the targets differ in different age groups. 4) Explain dosing issues (i.e., how much to give and how the doses compare with pediatrics and adults). 5) Outline what might modify or change the dose of GH.

    "Rectal Cancer: Current Trends and Evolving Therapies in a Multidisciplinary Disease"

    At the completion of this education activity, participants will be able to: 1) Evaluate the current approaches to diagnosis and staging of rectal cancer. 2) Describe techniques used to preoperatively stage rectal cancer. 3) Explain how clinical staging drives management decisions. 4) Discuss the indications for preoperative and postoperative radiation therapy. 5) Evaluate surgical strategies, intra-operative staging, and recent advances in surgical techniques. 6) Discuss the impact of newer chemotherapy regimens on the management of rectal cancer. 7) Discuss the importance of multidisciplinary input and collaboration to outcomes for patients with rectal cancer.

    At the completion of this education activity, participants will be able to: 1) Identify the clinical features commonly seen in individuals with Fibromyalgia. 2) Describe the systemic and regional syndromes that overlap with Fibromyalgia. 3) Describe some of the likely pathogenic mechanisms playing a role in Fibromyalgia. 4) Discuss the most appropriate treatments for Fibromyalgia.

    At the completion of this education activity, participants will be able to: 1) Effectively and accurately assess wounds, both acute and chronic. 2) Construct a management algorithm for wounds. 3) Describe the indications and efficacy of some of the latest wound treatment protocols, including decubitus.

Pain Management Education for Physicians
and other healthcare providers:

Effective January 1, 2006, physicians and other healthcare professionals will be required to complete six hours of pain management education, and one hour of Oregon-specific pain management education, as a condition for license renewal. This is a one-time requirement.

One way to meet this requirement is through on-line CME with the American Medical Association. "Pain Management: the Online Series" offers 12 credits total, 1 credit each. http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/13497.html.

The Oregon Pain Management Commission, established within the Department of Human Services as a result of Senate Bill 885, is the provider of the one-hour Oregon-specific pain education. www.oregonpain.org

Accreditation

Physicians:
Grand Rounds: Cascade Healthcare Community is accredited by the Oregon Medical Association to sponsor Continuing Medical Education for physicians. Cascade Healthcare Community designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ (for each Grand Rounds). Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

American Academy of Family Physicians:
Application for CME credit has been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians. Determination of credit is pending. The AAFP invites comments on any activity that has been approved for AAFP CME credit. Please forward your comments on the quality of this activity to cmecomment@aafp.org.

Pharmacists:

Nurses:

Continuing Medical Education Mission Statement
To provide continuing education for St. Charles medical staff, the CONet hospitals, and the region with the following goals:

  1. To provide quality CME responding to the needs and interests of the medical staff in general and specialty practices.
  2. To maintain and improve medical practice standards by providing education about established and innovative medical practices.
  3. To respond to hospital/medical staff quality assurance indicators with educational programs/information when appropriate.
  4. To include in our educational activities the following: lectures with question/answer/discussion period, telemedicine conferencing, simulation/demonstration situations, inservices, targeted case reviews, regional conferences and opportunity for self-guided study.
  5. To evaluate the expected and/or desired results from CME activities.
