CME 3rd Quarter 2007

GRAND ROUNDS
The intent of the Grand Rounds series is to present information in keeping with the needs of the broadest possible physician audience. The purpose of CME is to enhance the physicianís ability to care for patients. It is the responsibility of the St. Charles Education Committee to assure that CME activities are designed primarily for that purpose. Grand Rounds are at 0700 in the Center for Health & Learning at St. Charles Medical Center ‚ Bend, Conference Rooms C & D, and broadcast live to St. Charles Medical Center-Redmond.

    "Benign Anorectal Disease: An Update on Management"

    Objectives: 1) Review medical management of hemorrhoidal disease, including an update on office based procedures for hemorrhoids, outcomes and limitations. 2) Review surgical treatment of symptomatic disease. 3) Discuss the development of perirectal abscess and fistula-in-ano. 4) Review symptoms, causes and treatment options for abscess and fistula. 5) Recognize the risk of HPV perianal infection and squamous cell cancer of the anus. 6) Describe treatment options for perianal condlyoma.

    Objectives: 1) List some of the fundamental statistical principles that relate to the conduct of clinical trials and to the use of evidence-based medicine. 2) Review specific clinical trial errors as they relate to trials actually published in the medical literature. 3) Recognize the importance of reading clinical trial data critically as this relates to making medical decisions for individual patients.

    Objectives: 1) Describe the endoscopic and histologic findings of gastrointestinal Helicobacter pylori infection. 2) Discuss methods that can be used to detect Helicobacter pylori infection, with an emphasis on those methods that are available locally. 3) Describe the two primary methods of HPV detection. 4) Discuss Digene Hybrid Capture Method in detail including false negative and false positive rates, current recommendations for use, and FDA approval. 5) List recommendations for Her2/neu testing in breast cancer.

    Objectives: 1) Discuss regional challenges specific to Cascade Healthcare Community (geographic distance, terrain, and weather). 2) Discuss issues related to the search and rescue of trauma patients (finding the patient, accessing and bringing the patient back). 3) Illustrate regional and resource challenges using a case study involving a massive transfusion in a pediatric patient.
Pain Management Education for Physicians
and other healthcare providers:

Effective January 1, 2006, physicians and other healthcare professionals will be required to complete six hours of pain management education, and one hour of Oregon-specific pain management education, as a condition for license renewal. This is a one-time requirement.

One option to meet this requirement is through on-line CME with the American Medical Association "Pain Management: the Online Seriesî offers 12 credits total, 1 credit each. http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/ category/13497.html.

The Oregon Pain Management Commission, established within the Department of Human Services as a result of Senate Bill 885, is the provider of the one-hour Oregon-specific pain education. To fulfill this requirement, go to: www.oregonpain.org

Accreditation

Physicians:
Grand Rounds: Cascade Healthcare Community is accredited by the Oregon Medical Association to sponsor Continuing Medical Education for physicians. Cascade Healthcare Community designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ (for each Grand Rounds). Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

American Academy of Family Physicians:
Application for CME credit has been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians. Determination of credit is pending. The AAFP invites comments on any activity that has been approved for AAFP CME credit. Please forward your comments on the quality of this activity to cmecomment@aafp.org.

Pharmacists:
Application for CE credit has been filed with the Oregon Board of Pharmacy. Determination of credit is pending.

Nurses:
Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number 8050 for 1.00 contact hour for each hour attended.

Continuing Medical Education Mission Statement
To provide continuing education for St. Charles medical staff, the CONet hospitals, and the region with the following goals:

  1. To provide quality CME responding to the needs and interests of the medical staff in general and specialty practices.
  2. To maintain and improve medical practice standards by providing education about established and innovative medical practices.
  3. To respond to hospital/medical staff quality assurance indicators with educational programs/information when appropriate.
  4. To include in our educational activities the following: lectures with question/answer/discussion period, telemedicine conferencing, simulation/demonstration situations, inservices, targeted case reviews, regional conferences and opportunity for self-guided study.
  5. To evaluate the expected and/or desired results from CME activities.
