CME 4th Quarter 2007

GRAND ROUNDS
The intent of the Grand Rounds series is to present information in keeping with
the needs of the broadest possible physician audience. The purpose of CME is
to enhance the physician’s ability to care for patients. It is the responsibility of
the St. Charles Education Committee to assure that CME activities are designed
primarily for that purpose. Grand Rounds are at 0700 in the Center for Health
& Learning at St. Charles Medical Center – Bend, Conference Rooms C & D.

    "It's Not Your Granddaddy's Grand Rounds Anymore: New paradigms in medical learning and credentialing you'll want in your medical practice"
    George Mejicano, MD, MS, Associate Dean for Continuing Professional Development and Director of the Office of Continuing Professional Development in Medicine and Public Health, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health
    Objectives: 1) Discuss the current healthcare environment and how it affects autonomy in a physician’s clinical practice. 2) Review the concepts of adult learning theory. 3) Describe the future of CME, and its impact in meeting requirements for physician specialty certification, hospital privileges, and pay for performance. 4) Describe tools that will enable physicians to access evidence-based CME. 5) Discuss how physicians can link their education to measurable changes in long-term knowledge and skills.

    Objectives: 1) Discuss the role that mitochondria play in various diseases including genetic, as well as late onset such as neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes and cancer. 2) Describe novel approaches to monitor the progression of these conditions, and treatments required to manage them.

October 9-11, 2007

Clinical Adolescent and Adult Sexual Assault Update (October 12, 2007). This course is intended for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and nurses who examine or counsel pediatric and adult victims of sexual assault.

Cancer Clinical Conference (Tumor Board) – Wednesdays at 0700. SCMC – B, Conference Room C&D. Cancer Clinical Conferences are broadcast via videoconference to SCMC - Redmond.

Cardiac Clinical Conference – First Tuesday of each month at 1230. SCMC – B, Conference Room D (informal case presentations without CME other Tuesday mornings at 0700 in CR D).

Gastroenterology Clinicopathologic Conference – 1st Thursday at 0700. SCMC – B, Location varies.

Endocrinology Multidisciplinary Conference – Quarterly, 2nd Tuesday, (March, June, September and December) at 0700. SCMC - Bend, location varies.

Multidisciplinary Breast Conference – 2nd & 4th Thursdays at 0700. SCMC - B, Location varies.

These activities have been approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.

 

Pain Management Education for Physicians and other healthcare providers: As a result of Senate Bill 885, the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners requires a one-hour pain management course specific to Oregon provided by the Pain Management Commission of the Department of Human Services; and a minimum of 6 (six) credit hours in the subjects of pain management and/or the treatment of terminally ill and dying patients.

The required CME must be completed after January 1, 2000 and before January 2, 2009 for current licensees (Administrative Rule 847-010-0100). To fulfill the one-hour course specific to Oregon, go to: www.oregonpain.org.

One way to meet the pain education requirement is through on-line CME with the American Medical Association. “Pain Management: the Online Series” offers 12 credits total, 1 credit each. http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/13497.html.

 

Accreditation

Physicians:
Grand Rounds: Cascade Healthcare Community is accredited by the Oregon Medical Association to sponsor Continuing Medical Education for physicians. Cascade Healthcare Community designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ (for each Grand Rounds). Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

American Academy of Family Physicians:
Application for CME credit has been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians. Determination of credit is pending. The AAFP invites comments on any activity that has been approved for AAFP CME credit. Please forward your comments on the quality of this activity to cmecomment@aafp.org.

Pharmacists:
Application for CE credit has been filed with the Oregon Board of Pharmacy. Determination of credit is pending.

Nurses:
Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number 8050 for 1.00 contact hour for each hour attended.
