What
is MedStars?
MedStars is a summer residential program at Oregon Health & Science
University (OHSU) designed to help high school students learn how to
pursue a health care career. The Oregon Area Health Education Centers
Program sponsors the MedStars Health Careers Honors Program. Scholarships
to attend are provided by your local AHEC.
When
is MedStars?
MedStars 2008 will be held Tuesday, July 15, Saturday, July 19, 2008. Students will receive a more detailed schedule upon
acceptance.
Who
should attend MedStars?
High school students who are in their junior or senior year of
high school, or entering college freshmen are eligible. Students who
have demonstrated their interest in a health career by participating
in other health careers programs and students from rural and underserved
minority communities will be accepted into the program, based on their
letters of recommendation and application.
What
does MedStars cost?
Scholarships are available from Cascades East AHEC to cover $200 of
program tuition coasts, which covers lodging meals and transportation
during the program. A $50 deposit is required at the time of application.
In some cases a portion of the deposit may be waived if it is a financial
barrier to participation.
What
will I do at MedStars?
You will participate with medical, nursing, dental and physician assistant
students at OHSU to complete an independent study project and work with
a team of fellow Med Stars students to prepare a presentation and poster
about your project. There will be several hands-on activities in research
laboratories, surgery, the dental school and opportunity to gain information
about health career programs within Oregon.
