AHEC Success Stories in Central and Southeastern Oregon
- Burns has signed four new needed family practice physicians through their participation in AHEC medical student rotations. Two of these students participated in 3rd year medical student rotations in Burns while attending OHSU, and each had such a great experience they convinced 2 additional doctors to join them in Burns after completion of their residency requirements. Burns continues to rely on recruits from AHEC rotations to fill openings when needed.
- In Lakeview, Lake District Hospital, Lake County Public Health, long-term care, home health, hospice and local physicians offices have all benefited greatly from the nurses trained through OHSUs Rural Frontier Bachelors Degree Nursing program. These home grown nurses generally stay in their communities and have made a real impact on our rural nursing shortage. Burns has also experienced great success with this program.
- The Cascades East Family Practice Residency Program in Klamath Falls has been a lifesaver for Lake District Hospital through the recent years. 3rd year Family Practice Residents have assisted Lakeview with Emergency Room coverage at times when a shortage of local physicians left the hospital in critical need. The residency program doctors provided ER coverage for the hospital, so the remaining local doctors could have adequate time off.
- Continuing education opportunities are being offered through video conferencing in Redmond, Burns, Prineville, Lakeview, and Madras, helping health professionals all across the region gain the critical education and medical updates they need while eliminating the long travel times and cost associated with attending training outside the region. Staffing issues arise when staff are required to go out of their communities for education.
Cascades East AHEC is committed to helping communities address increasing demands for cultural competency that comes with increasing diversity and population growth. Hospitals and health departments in Lakeview, Prineville, Bend and are taking advantage of subscription discounts through AHEC to a monthly journal that provides assistance with medical language competency, and CEAHEC sponsored a series of educational sessions via Ed-Net for health providers throughout the region.
- A new EMT Continuing Education workshop series will be offered through the CONet teleconferencing system beginning Spring 2002. Over $38,000 in SB911 EMT Training funds have awarded since December 2000 to communities in Harney, Jefferson, Klamath, Lake and Malheur counties.
- Many local high school students have had an opportunity to attend AHEC sponsored health careers summer camps. High percentages of past participants are currently pursuing health career education or have become practicing health professionals. We continue to support these opportunities, knowing many students are likely to "come home" to live and work. New initiatives and partnerships with school-to-career programs offer even more opportunities to link students with health careers education.
