Guidelines and Requirements

SCHS receives many requests for job shadowing experiences. We are limited in our ability to meet these requests. These guidelines apply ONLY to students (non-high school) or adults who are interested in learning about health care careers. Job shadowing is limited to observation only and does not involve hands-on patient care, direct patient contact or acquiring clinical skills.

Background: At present, St. Charles hosts about 1200 students/learners each academic year.

  1. 200+ professional degree students coordinated by the Clerkship Program Coordinator (Tonya Crockett)

  2. 800 college degree/certificate students coordinated by the Student Rotation Coordinator in Clinical Education

  3. 200 high school students in formal Health Occupations programs coordinated by Cascade East AHEC (Debbie Cole)

  4. And approximately 100 student/adult observers to whom these guidelines apply. These learners are also coordinated by Cascades East AHEC.

We will make every effort to accommodate these requests from college students or adults returning to school or seeking a career change:

  • Pre-MIT (Medical Imaging Technology) students from OIT. These students are enrolled in MIT 103 (a pre-requisite class to the MIT program) and are asked to shadow 6-8 hours in a variety of imaging modalities.

  • PT/OT program applicants generally need between 30-60 hours of shadowing.

We will also try to accommodate requests from SCHS caregivers to allow shadowing in another department as well as requests from former SCHS caregivers who left under good circumstances (are on the β€œyes”-rehire list) and desire a job shadow experience for career change purposes.

Additional requests will be considered and accommodated as possible given the existing constraints on caregivers and departments.

Requests must be made at least 3 weeks in advance of the requested shadowing dates. All applicants must complete the following requirements. These requirements apply to job shadow requests of any length.

To cover the cost of the required background check,  each applicant will pay a $20 fee- refundable if the request cannot be fulfilled. However, this fees is not refundable if the background check results disqualifies the applicant.
